One Response to Fan Question About Bowel Sounds

I think that being a good medic, nurse, doctor, or any healthcare provider for that matter is 80% assessment skills. You obviously need to have the knowledge to act and treat based on said findings. But if you dont know what to look for then how will you know what to do? Not saying that I listen to bowel sounds on every toe pain I pick up. But I do for abd/epigastric/chest pain. Im listening to lung sounds anyway. It only takes a few extra seconds to listen to bowel sounds and even if our tx doesnt change it gives me a better picture of what could potentially be wrong w my patient. That might just be my take on it because Ive worked in the ER setting as well and thats one of the things I got used to assessing on all belly/chest related complaints. Just my 2 cents 🙂 I cant wait to hear your thoughts!
